The Temple of Debod: A Piece of Egypt in the Heart of Madrid

A Surprising Gift from Egypt

Tucked away in Parque del Oeste, just a few steps from Plaza de España, the Temple of Debod is one of Madrid’s most unexpected and magical landmarks. What makes it so special? It’s an authentic Egyptian temple, over 2,000 years old, that was relocated stone by stone from the banks of the Nile to the Spanish capital.

This ancient wonder was gifted to Spain by the Egyptian government in 1968, as a token of gratitude for Spain’s help in saving the temples of Nubia from the flooding caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

A Journey Through Time

Originally built in southern Egypt near Aswan, the temple was dedicated to the gods Amun and Isis. Today, it’s one of the few places outside Egypt where you can admire a real, ancient temple surrounded by serene reflecting pools and lush greenery.

Inside, you’ll find preserved hieroglyphs, informative displays, and 3D models that take you on a journey through ancient Egyptian religion, architecture, and the story of how the temple made its way to Madrid.
